6 weeks throwing and handbuildng

This is a 6-week pottery course open to students of all levels, whether you are completely new to ceramics or looking to build on your existing skills.

Throughout the course, you will explore both hand-building and wheel throwing techniques. We will begin by introducing the fundamentals of hand-building and throwing on the wheel, where you will develop key skills including centring, lifting, shaping and finishing your forms.

You will then learn how to turn (trim) your pots once they have reached the leather-hard stage. This process refines your work by removing excess clay and creating a clean, balanced finish using specialist trimming tools.

As your confidence grows, we will explore a range of surface decoration techniques, including carving, texture and glazing, allowing you to personalise your pieces and experiment with different finishes.

By the end of the course, you will have produced a collection of finished ceramic pieces while gaining a solid foundation in the core techniques of pottery.

6 weeks throwing only

This is a 6-week throwing course for those looking to get familiar with the wheel, or develop their throwing skills further.

We will begin by focusing on developing strong key throwing skills: centring, lifting, shaping (cylinders and bowls) and finishing on the wheel.

You will then learn turning (trimming) a pot - this is the method of finishing and finessing thrown work once leather hard (partly dried) by returning it to the wheel and removing excess clay using a metal tool.

We will explore surface decoration - carving and slip decoration techniques

And finally how to glaze your pots to achieve the best finish with our wide selection of unique, in-house studio glazes.

There is a maximum of 9 students on the throwing course so each student has a wheel.
