Throwing Courses

  • This is a 6-week throwing course for those looking to get familiar with the wheel, or develop their throwing skills further.

    We will begin by focusing on developing strong key throwing skills: centring, lifting, shaping (cylinders and bowls) and finishing on the wheel. 

    You will then learn turning (trimming) a pot - this is the method of finishing and finessing thrown work once leather hard (partly dried) by returning it to the wheel and removing excess clay using a metal tool.  

    We will explore surface decoration - carving and slip decoration techniques

    And finally how to glaze your pots to achieve the best finish with our wide selection of unique, in-house studio glazes.

  • This is a 10-week throwing course for those looking to develop their throwing skills further. 

    The course will focus on

    - The cycle of clay from start to finish and information about types of clay and firings

    - Developing strong key throwing skills: centring, lifting, shaping and finishing pieces on the wheel.

    - Expand by practising more complex shapes and with bigger weights of clay dependant on each student's ability.

    - Turning (trimming) a pot - finishing and finessing thrown work once leather hard.

    - Pulling handles to give your pots extra functionality and style.

    - Surface decoration - carving and other decoration techniques

    - Glazing pots with our wide selection of unique studio glazes.

Our 10 week throwing course starting in April is sold out.

What is provided?
Materials, glazes and tools are provided throughout the course. 

Each student will have their own wheel to work on for the entire course. 

Clay is charged at £4 per kg (pots are only weighed once finished and ready for firing, clay for throwing practice is unlimited.)

What should I bring?
Please bring an apron or an old shirt, a towel, a pen and a notepad. 

We have a wide selection of tools available but you may wish to bring your own if you have them.

What is the size of the class?
This class caters for up to 9 students.
